Difficult to believe this is our 4th year of watching the Rodeo Fourth of July Parade. Rodeo puts on one of the best small town festivities to be found. With family fun at the park consisting of games, refreshments and lots of laughter, followed by an evening parade and then a delicious barbeque at the community center. Music, dancing and a cake auction round out the evening.

So the joke is on me. I got all excited about an ad on craigslist for a free, life-sized killer whale replica. I was trying to figure out where I could put it in our GhoatsTown. I talked it over with both Kathleen and Dori, who now think I’m even crazier than they already thought I was. So I called to see if it was still available. Well, the joke was also on Amanda. Her roommates had put it on craigslist as a joke. There never was a free killer whale. I guess I’m still a fool even on April Fools Day!

Here is the craigslist listing.

Free Killer Whale Replica

So you are probably asking yourself, why I have a life size killer whale
replica, so here’s the story.

I used to work for the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, and the replica killer whale we had was recently damaged while we were changing exhibits. One of the tail fins was broken off and, the museum decided to throw it out rather than use the space to store the whale. I didn’t want to see this beautiful whale go to waste so I decided to take it home, after all only a small part of the tail was broken, the rest of the whale is perfectly fine. So I have kept it at home for the last few months and my two young kids have really enjoyed playing with it.

However this comes to the sad part of my story and the opportunity for you. My husband is making me get rid of the whale so that we can have more space in our garage for our new car. Why he would rather have a mini-van than a whale i don’t, know but he has put his foot down. I need to get rid of the whale ASAP and will part with it for free as long as it goes to a good home. All you need is a trailer long enough to fit it on. It is about 20 feet long and will fit on most flatbed trailers(that’s what i used to get it home).

So if you want a free whale, give me a call (xxx)-xxx-xxxx. I would really hate to see this amazing replica end up in the garbage. The first person who can come pick it up can have it. There is some minor damage to the tail, but it could be easily repaired with a little TLC. Call if you are interested and I can give you directions.

Thanks for looking,
Amanda
(xxx)-xxx-xxxx

Saturday, Portal celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in glorious, campy, laugh-out-loud fun. This was my first Portal St. Patty’s celebration, and one not to be missed, not only because the after-parade singing and festivities were held at the LIBRARY, but also because life cannot be complete without cheering on a group of grey-haired, fuzzy green band hat wearing, kazoo playing, high stepping parade participants. The parade was followed by refreshments (green punch and cookies galore) at the library, with entertainment provided by a group of singers led by vocalist Roberta Ward and keyboardist Jean Wadsworth. The highlight for me was hearing “I’ll take you home again, Kathleen.” Not very often I hear my name in a song.

Tuesday I begin my new position as Branch Manager of Myrtle Kraft Library. I am deeply honored that I was chosen out of a large pool of qualified applicants, and feel quite fortunate that I was able to get a job during these tough economic times when others I know are laid off without warning. I asked during my interview about the economic outlook for the county, as well as for the Branch Manager position. I was assured the outlook remains positive for my position, as well as the library system in general, although the county will be making cutbacks in other areas. I feel quite connected to the patrons of the library, and have met several “kindred spirits.”

We believe him to be the bobcat that was rescued and raised by a neighboring ranch which would explain his lack of fear of humans. We can only hope that he learns to live further away from humans, as we have heard that other neighbors of ours have shot bobcats that were near their property. Supposedly, they needed to kill the bobcats in order to protect their chickens, ducks and geese, but in my opinion it is our responsibility as livestock owners to ensure that we keep our animals protected from the wild via fencing and pens. I would never let chickens run loose on my property, except during the day when I was outside with them. Otherwise it is like putting out bait for whatever wild critter is walking by and in my opinion that is not only irresponsible but inhumane.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching I have been giving lots of thought to all that I have for which to be thankful. This list is endless, as each day brings new blessings into my life. My morning ritual begins with sipping a cup of coffee as the sun rises over the Peloncillo Mountains. I begin my gratitude list with whatever jumps into my head, a stream of consciousness, a river of grateful thanks. Hot water, electricity, indoor toilets, the refrigerator….things that might get taken for granted but these are luxuries that many in the world do not have. How blessed I am to have been born in the United States. I learned a deep love of my country from my father who proudly served in the US Navy.

He sacrificed much because of his conviction and love for his country, neighbors and family. I watched my dad tenderly unfold and put out the American flag on national holidays. He taught me the importance of taking down and properly folding the flag at the end of the day. I am so thankful for my father and how well he cared for his family. My dad is proud of his family and always remembers to tell each of us.

In additon to learning a deep love of country from my father, I also learned to assist others whenever possible. Dad is the kind of man who always stops to help at the scene of an accident and will also give whatever assistance he can to a stranded motorist. He always carries a first aid kit and fire extinguisher in his car for such emergencies.

I am thankful for my father who instilled in me a deep appreciation and gratitude for our beautiful country!
